* Day 4, Kooskia - Grangeville (8/4/00)
Map: Day 4
Day 4
Day: 46.7 km | Trip: 291 km

My first real hill day. I had Müsli for breakfast and left late at 8:15 AM. As I'm going south currently it will get hotter. Everything went fine till Harpster. Then the big hill towards Grangeville came. The hill was not so steep that I would have to stand all the way, just sometimes. But then the tree cover went away, it was getting closer to noon and the sun was frying my head. After the steep part of the hill was over it went up and down and up and down till Grangeville.

The gas station right at the town border has great baked stuff (e.g. danish). I also discovered that my cell phone finally finds a network, there is analog coverage. I picked up three messages from my dad. He thought I just kept the phone off to save batteries. He did not know that Cellular One was lying about the coverage "everywhere except when you are blocked by hills". Well US Route 12 is a major trucking route and has no phone coverage anywhere. Grangeville is the fist place since Missoula!

I decided to stay in Grangeville even though it was only 1 PM (after I had lunch). It was just too hot to continue on till White Bird and I wanted to use the opportunity to make some phone calls. So I went to the RV and Trailer Park. I called Charu who was very happy to hear from me. She was worried that something bad happened. For Dinner I had Lipton's Noodles and Sauce. Good stuff, does not fill you up though. But if you fry a chicken breast this stuff makes a complete meal. Lipton rules!

Tomorrow will be a tough day, 49 miles and one small hill.
